It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will take a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime previously took a six-month pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with others alternatively handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.
This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
